Our program sees theory as important to understanding the many material and symbolic phenomena related to gender. Thus theory is incorporated at some level into almost every class the department offers. Students acquire skills for reading and employing theory in their pursuit of the intellectual, social, and political questions that motivate their own research. The following list suggests but some of the many types of theory in which our faculty specializes: feminist theory; post-modern and post-structural theory; standpoint theory; intersectionality; literary theory; queer theory; theories of the body and sexuality; postcolonial theory; psychoanalysis; law and bioethical theory; critical race theory; affect theory; feminist new materialism; performativity.
